Mindful Living Wednesday Wisdom

It’s just one of those days

It's just one of those days when..

It is just one of those days.

A somewhat weird day.

I woke up enthusiastically enough, enjoyed my coffee and looked at my day’s to-do list. Finished my usual work in the kitchen – lunch, breakfast, dinner planning and got to work.

However, I’ve not been able to meet my work deadlines. I was stuck on a particular thing and . . . sigh! You know how that works.

I thought baking a cake would cheer me up but a phone call interrupted the process and I ended up with a hard microwaved mug cake.

Determined to make it turn out well, I mixed more batter and baked it in a bowl. It was okay.

The sky looked kind of gloomy outside and I thought I should bring the clothes in from the balcony before they became damp, when the phone rang. Five minutes later the skies opened up and well, I brought in damp clothes. Oh, come on, they’ll dry! I thought.

Then I got back to work, because deadlines . . . and started feeling a little drowsy. Maybe it was the weather and the flood alert over the next three days.

I decided to wash the dishes . . . and broke a dish.

I sat down and drank a glass of water slowly.

Breathed.

Decided to clean out a shelf and tripped while getting off the stool.

Finally, I thought why not cook dinner to cheer me up and made phulka rotis.

Now, look at that face, I say!

Clearly it was just one of those days. I thought, maybe I should just lay on the couch and binge-watch a show!

Life brings us some funny challenges that, in their own sweet way, teach us interesting life-lessons.

If only we’d listen!

Sure, I normally think, “don’t sweat the small stuff” and invariably manage to let it go with a few silent expletives and some laughter.

But sometimes, it is not so easy.

Some kinds of drama just won’t allow me to let go.

And when there are people involved, well, it’s just a bit harder to achieve peace of mind.

Usually, reading something uplifting, something I enjoy, gets me there.

Today’s pick is this lovely poem by Rumi.

Out Beyond Ideas

by Rumi

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase “each other”
doesn’t make any sense.
The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.

What a beautiful poem! It’s a wonderful way to recognize that I am responsible for how I feel, how I react, how I respond.

And clearly, it’s just one of those days and this too shall pass, right?

Some days are like this. And the only way to get through them is to remember that they are only one day, and that every day ends.

It's just one of those days

What do you do when you have one of those days and need to realign yourself and feel at peace?

Do you have a favorite quote or poem or self-talk habit?

I’d love to hear in the comments! Thank you!
