The Haiku Challenge 2012 – Day 8 – Self love

by Vidya Sury February 8, 2012 22 comments
It is Day 8 and the prompt is:  Quote: “This Above All, To Thine Own Self Be True”. Use all or part of the quote in your haiku.

Day 8:

 Self Love
Guard thy dignity
And to thine own self be true.
You are your best friend.
Man in the mirror
Remember you are worth it
 You deserve good things!

Day 8 – February 8th – Quote: This Above All, To Thine Own Self Be True
The quote is one of my most favorites and comes from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Act I Scene III where Lord Polonius speaks to his son Laertes. Perhaps one of the most beautiful passages ever written! My uncle actually has the following verse printed,  framed and adorning his wall.

Let’s read the whole thing, shall we?

LORD POLONIUS:

Yet here, Laertes! aboard, aboard, for shame!
The wind sits in the shoulder of your sail,
And you are stay’d for. There; my blessing with thee!
And these few precepts in thy memory

See thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue,
Nor any unproportioned thought his act.

Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.
Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried,
Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel;
But do not dull thy palm with entertainment
Of each new-hatch’d, unfledged comrade. Beware
Of entrance to a quarrel, but being in,

Bear’t that the opposed may beware of thee.
Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice;
Take each man’s censure, but reserve thy judgment.
Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy,
But not express’d in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
For the apparel oft proclaims the man,
And they in France of the best rank and station
Are of a most select and generous chief in that.

Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.

This above all: to thine ownself be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
Farewell: my blessing season this in thee!

Words worth heeding!

Hi Vidya. I “needed” this one today. Your timing is impeccable. Remember the “happy” day I had not long ago? Having the opposite today. However, you bring a smile and your words bring inspiration and hope. Thank you my friend. Keep those lovely words coming. I thoroughly enjoy each and every one.

“You are your best friend” —> I love this line!
And it’s so true but we often fail to understand this.
Nicely said! 🙂

For most people, life is so hectic that the obvious things are taken for granted, and often, forgotten. 🙂 Glad you liked it, Amber!

“to thine ownself be true” has been a mantra of mine since high school and even now, I find I need to deepen my own practice. There are so many teeny tiny ways we can begin to deny ourselves, berate ourselves, lie to ourselves and even the smallest amount of this can truly hinder our life experience, and prevent us from being all that we can be.

Such potent wisdom here.

Thank you for sharing!

Thank you, Aileen. You know, my Mom always used to say – if we can face ourselves in the mirror without feeling bad about something, then it is all good. You put it so well about denying ourselves; most of the time it is our own selves that hold us back! Am glad you came by!

Vidya,
you share such beauty–thank you:)
I think this stands out to me today: “Remember you are worth it”. Such a powerful affirmation when we :remember”. And thank you for including Shakespeare’s verse–very inspirational!

Thank you, Joy. That verse was something my Mom used to recite, you know. Just snippets, on occasion and in context. 🙂 It is so important to remember our own worth – and remove our limiting beliefs. Affirmations are powerful! I am glad you came by!

It’s so true.
You are definitely your own best friend and you need to treat yourself the way you do your best friends…did that make sense?
I need coffee.
You are amazing.
xoxo
