Will You #SayThanks With Me?

#SayThanks Vidya Sury

I have a confession to make. I avoid reading the newspaper in the morning because I do not want my day to begin with bad news headlines. I prefer to have my coffee and start the day with positive thoughts.

I’ve often wished that we could wake up to happy news and inspiring stories and find the killing, rape and other negative stuff buried in the depths of the paper. I can dream, right?

So when I heard how HT made the dreams of Shristi, a class 12 topper come true, it warmed my heart. Let me share it with you.

Shristi, a class 12 student topped her class. Her dream was to be featured in the newspaper and make her family proud. She wrote to the HT Team expressing her wish. The HT team decided to fulfill this young girl’s dream. Not just that – they went a step further and planned a far bigger surprise to create an unforgettable experience for her. They dedicated a personalized first page in their newspaper for her. Next, they organized a thrilling helicopter ride for her to fly high above the city with her family!

The entire experience has been videotaped by the HT Team to capture Shristi’s emotional ride with her family.

So what’s the big deal here?

This is part of a campaign by HT to give back to their readers and #SayThanks for the love and support they’ve received and for their role in HT’s success. They are creating a wave of social positivity by thanking their readers and inviting them to acknowledge and express their gratitude to the people who made a difference in their own lives!

With the hectic lifestyles we all lead today, it can be so easy to take the people who encourage and motivate us for granted. Often, they are the people who are our cheerleaders and helps us grow and succeed.

We all know that Gratitude makes life worth living.

“If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.” Meister Eckhart

And of course everyone has something to be grateful for and someone to thank!

For my part, I am glad that HT has proved that the newspaper needn’t always be bad news or only highlight the famous – or infamous. Everyone is special!

Here is what I plan to do:

  • List five people who have made a difference in my life
  • Write each one of them a note / call them to #SayThanks
  • Repeat with five more.

Will you join me?

It can be your Mom who tirelessly strives to make you happy, no matter what.
It can be a colleague at work who always supports you.
It can be your best friend who stands by you no matter what.
It can be an old school teacher whose words shaped your career today.
It can be the lift man who smiles at you every day.
It can be anybody.

Will you join me in #SayingThanks?

This is so special and I am with you that I don’t like reading bad news every single day. In fact, when I watched the news every day it would seep into my dreams and it was affecting me. It’s funny you writing this because last week I thought of some people who have changed my life and I thought of writing them a letter-an actual written letter, in cursive! I may very well do this now instead of just think it.

Oh these days, the highlight of the news is all-negative stuff. I remember, in my son’s school, someone read the news headline every morning during school assembly and they were instructed to focus on the positive.

I’ve kept up writing snail mail letters to my family, as most of them are not online and anyway prefer to hold the paper in their hands and read when they want. Makes me feel wonderful too! I love writing cursive and using my favorite pens, Birgit!

Like you avoid newspapers, I too do the same and I don’t even watch news on television just because of the negativity…So, I’ll join you Vidya and make sure I say thanks to atleast 5 people today and tell them how much they mean to me, how much I appreciate what they do for me ….

Hugs Nabanita! I find that such a lovely exercise – and there’s such joy in actually writing letters or meeting someone – rather than texting or emailing! Love you!
