That thing called parenting. Joyful and wonderful? Yes. Lots of free time and rest and relaxation? No. It is a 24-hour job and we’d be lucky if we accomplished everything we’d planned for the day. Forget about “me” time. There’s just no time to even contemplate it, leave alone actually make it happen. Bosom buddies seem like a thing of the past and a regular routine seems like another life. I remember those days when I’d be lucky if I showered three days in a row and ate my meals at the table. I’d feel envious listening to at all those parents who talked about a morning walk – the only walking I did in the morning was inside the house. The only exercise I got was housework. Oh, they’d say join your kids when they play. What a hope! I am guilty of grabbing that time to get the cooking…

A couple of days ago, I was at my dentist’s clinic. Just as he was about to get going with the dreaded drill, there was a power outage. It was a good thing it went when it did. We had to wait a little for the generator to kick in and to pass the time, started talking. Somehow the topic turned to health spas and their ads for natural ways to detox. And these days, every where we look, there’s some product or other that claims to remove toxins from the body and help one stay healthy. The discussion turned to the methods touted by some of the natural healers which involved fasting, liquid diets and herbal medicine. Then we had a good laugh when he said that most of these approaches had no solid research based evidence to show that they were effective. In fact, some of the products…

Now, on the face of it, I can see you saying,”really? another bunch of weight loss tips?” and I answer “yes!” I believe that happiness is good health too. Which is one of the reasons why I started a health blog. Today, I want to share a fantastic book I read recently: Losing It – Making Weight Loss Simple by Dhruv Gupta and Prachi Gupta, founders of the FITHO diet. Again, you are probably thinking, oh, another of those. I confess I thought the same thing, until I started reading the book. The author was kind enough to send me a review copy. I generally tend to take books like these with a pinch of reality and sometimes, cynicism. No matter what, nothing helps you lose weight as effectively as exercise and being conscious of what you put in your mouth. For all that is written about weight loss, what…

I know. Life is hectic. Tough. Lots to do. No time to take a break. But if you cease to exist because of all that you are trying to cram in to your life, you won’t be around to regret it. Oh wait, I just realized that  being around to regret it is much worse (and very expensive). But productivity is not about: working all hoursburning the midnight oilskipping your meals because you are too busy to eatslogging through your lunch hoursitting at your computer clacking away at your keyboard all the time becoming an extension of your desk If you think that being a workaholic is the best way to become more  productive, it is time to think again. Because you, my dear friend, need a break. Because addiction to work, like anything else, can be fatal. Why?When you work continuously ditching those breaks here is what you can expect: increased…

Do you wish you had a flat belly? Me too! I bring you good news:  looking good and feeling better doesn’t have to be the Holy Grail. For some weeks now, I know I have been sitting a lot (and probably shaving years off my life). Besides the fact that sitting more than three hours a day can kill you (very slowly), it is also not at all fun to be stationary. Although my work involves using the computer, I try and make it a point to get up every half hour and walk around. There’s always a list of things to do and I tackle the 5- or 10-minute chores. I am a big one for maintaining lists – they help me manage my time efficiently. But. In the last few weeks my schedule has gone a little out of whack. The best laid plans were shuffled, with a…

If you feel tired, drowsy and irritable often, I invite you to recharge yourself and get your energy levels back with these tips. What do you do when your to-do list is overflowing, and the weather is really hot and sweaty?  I would love a holiday, but I’ll have to wait until school closes for vacation and that is more than a month away. So in the meantime, I must find easy ways that don’t cost an arm and a leg to regroup my energies to keep me going like the superwoman I am. I am convinced I am a superwoman, you know. Blame it on the folks I work with. And I am also working on ways to clone myself. Did I hear someone say “oh my God?” The funny thing is, I’ve worked in hotter temperatures than where I live right now and yet I find this unbearable.…
