Every summer we try and plan a holiday. Of course, we shortlist places and then go crazy trying to zero in on one or two, or sometimes three. I have this secret agenda of trying to visit as many places as possible in Himachal Pradesh by 2020, when my son finishes his course. Nothing to stop me from going there afterwards, but you know how much nicer it is to combine a visit to him and travel together. Over the past year, we have visited several places–mostly impromptu trips that we didn’t really plan. There was a time I used to think I loved the beach, but over the years, I’ve realized I am more of a mountain type. I do love the beach, but given a choice between the two, it is the mountains for me. This recent summer, though, was really tough to plan, what with Sury traveling…

During our trip to Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh a few weeks ago, we visited the Menri Monastery, or Yung Drung Ling in Dolanji, Solan. Long story how we got there. We had booked our tickets to Chandigarh but were undecided about which places to visit in Himachal Pradesh once we go there. We were, of course, spoilt for choice, but it was also right in the middle of the monsoons, which usually means landslides in that area. We made a number of itineraries to make the best use of the five days we had at our disposal. I talked to friends. And while on my weekly marathon call with my BFF, she suggested Shimla. After a lot of discussion, we finalized our trip and decided to go to Kasauli, and from there, take a day trip to Barog and Solan. On the day we arrived at Kasauli, we walked around,…

In April 2015, during our trip to Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, we met the Dalai Lama. Oh yes, just saying that takes me right back to that moment when he asked me “You came all the way from Bangalore to meet me? Thank you!” And squeezed my hand. And leaned into my hug. And tickled my son’s beard. I still feel the warm cozy pressure of his hand. Okay, so, I actually meant to write something nice and soothing for N. I pondered a number of ideas and wrote up drafts (yay! Me). I literally sweated over them. I wished myself in a cool place. That’s where the Dalai Lama angle comes in. I thought, why not take another trip to one of the beautiful places we visited, and take you along with me? We’re visiting the Norbulingka Institute today, a peaceful and picturesque world all its own. That morning, we…

Around this time last year, we were in seventh heaven. We were just back from a trip to Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh. If you are wondering why I said heaven on earth, it is because Himachal Pradesh is called “Dev Bhoomi” and it was a wonderful spiritual experience. But let me start at the beginning! If you have a child in 12th grade or know one, you’ll definitely know that until they get into college, it is months of entrance tests and stress. There seems no chance of a break, leave alone a vacation. However, thanks to chance remark from my husband’s friend about the fabulous getaways around Chandigarh, where he was due to visit, we decided to join him on the trip. Since the weekend followed, we planned for a 5-day trip starting April 26 and returning on May 1, 2015 In a frenzy, I explored Flight Schedule at…
