World Smile Day. Did You Smile Today?

Yesterday (and today for some of you across the globe) was World Smile Day – this was created by Harvey Ball, who invented the original “smiley” back in 1963. Now it really makes me happy that the smiley was born the same year as I was – how exciting is that?

A smile is certainly a great way to feel good instantly! It is easy to do, easy to use, costs nothing and the best part? You make whoever is looking at you feel good, too!

One of the best compliments I received today as we were winding up our festival celebrations in our apartment building was this: that I have the power of a positive face. Someone identified me as “that lady who is always smiling and always has something nice to say”. I felt deeply grateful that she would remember me that way. It is my aim in life – that every life I touch should think of me with a smile!

Celebrate World Smile Day!

I know that a smile can change the direction my day goes. I always wondered how my Mom continued to smile, no matter how dire the situation. But over the years, I realized what a big impact it had on me as well as her. Such a small thing, what a huge difference it made!

And now, smiling has become a reflex action for me. I find it easy to smile. It is a great way to switch from feeling low to happy – so hard to be whiny when I am smiling. How wonderful to have people tell me that I have a warm and inviting smile and seeing me makes them happy!. It fills my heart when someone says that.

A smile is a curve that sets everything straight!

I remember the first sales training session I ever attended, decades ago. The first thing the trainer impressed upon us is this: always answer the phone with a smile – it shows in our voices. And always tackle any situation with a smile. Not the annoying ingratiating or sarcastic sort of thing in a serious situation – but maintaining an overall attitude of cheerfulness. This lesson has helped me throughout my life.

Smiling is motivational. That is why I’ve pledged to collect smiles. There have been some dark times when life looked impossible. But you know what they say about attitude! Still, I am only human and if ever I am on the verge of freaking out, my family rallies around to remind me it really does not matter in the big scheme of things. Stress never helps anyone beyond a point.

This World Smile Day, the theme is

Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile!”

Can you do that?

Smiling is really a choice. And when you make that choice, you also smile your way to good health!

So, did you smile today?

Go ahead! Make someone’s day!

Smile is soooo powerful. I still remember Corinne’s post on suicide prevention about a guy’s suicide note, “If one person smiles at me on the way, I will not jump.” Sadly, no one smiled!
It only takes a split second to smile and forget, yet to someone that needed it, it can last a lifetime. Yes, you do have a wonderful smile 🙂

You made me smile with this uplifting post:) I inherited not smiling when I am thinking. My Oma was the same. As soon as someone spoke to us then a smile came over us. I don’t even realize I am not smiling or look unhappy until someone says “smile! It’s not a bad day” I look up and giggle and realize I must have looked all forlorn when I am really not. I can say I love it when I make someone smile or laugh. Makes me feel not just good but great!
