1.     Have a conversation with her

When was the last time you actually sat with your mom and had a long chat? Do it now. If she’s far away, make a video call. Settle down to a nice long conversation. Get her to talk about your childhood. Take her a trip down memory lane. She will treasure it.

2.     Watch a movie together

No need to go to the cinema. Ask her to pick a film or show, bring the snacks, settle down on the couch and let her put her feet up. Enjoy! In fact, binge!

3.     Set up a home spa

Give Mom a foot massage. Or a hand massage. Or a back massage. Or a facial. Use her favorite cream/lotion. Let her sit back and enjoy.

4.     Pledge not to argue

Yes, this is so important. We love to argue with our moms, don’t we? Pledge to yourself that no matter what, you won’t argue or quarrel with your mom for the day. Go ahead and decide to do it for a week. What can be better as a Mothers Day gift?

5.     Run errands for her

Moms are the busiest people with never-ending to-do lists. Why not take over her chores for the day? Clean house. Cook. Give her the day off.

6.     Write her a letter

Yes, write her a letter telling her how much you love her, and what you like about her. If you want to email her, that’s fine too. Why not go overboard and do it every day for a week? Add photos and quotes to keep it interesting.

7.     Make a memory jar

You need a large jar/container. Even a cereal box covered in pretty wrapping paper will do. Next, take a few sheets of paper and cut them into small notes. On each note, write a special memory of your mom. Fill the jar. Gift it to her. Watch her eyes fill up with joy!  You can also do this in a notebook and gift it. Feel free to decorate it with photos. Best Mothers Day gift!

8.     Make a slideshow of photos

Too pressed for time to make the memory jar? How about a slideshow of your favorite photos with Mom or Mom’s favorite family photos? Add her favorite songs. Watch it together. Set it up on her laptop or tablet so she can see it whenever she feels like. Include a box of tissues.

9.     Say it with flowers

Pick some flowers from your yard and rustle up a bouquet. Gift it to your mom with a handmade card. No yard? No problem. Make a large card and draw flowers on it. Then color them and gift it to her.  If you enjoy DIY, grab some wire and beads or color paper and make some flowers.

10.  Cook her a gift

Bake her a cake or cookies. Or take over cooking for the day. Be sure to clean up afterwards!

11.  Spread the love

On a bunch of cards, write what you love about your Mom and hide them around the house for her to find.

12.  Have a photo shoot

If there’s one thing I regret, it is not taking enough photos with my Mom. Go ahead and enjoy a photo shoot with your Mom. All you need is your phone camera. Create memories to cherish.

13.  Make a fruit or veggie basket

No, don’t laugh. This is one of the most useful gifts you can think of. Especially during these times. Yes, I admit you have to buy produce for this if you are not growing them. Still, so worth it. Your mom will love this.

14.  Take over her cleaning

Show your appreciation for Mom by taking over her cleaning. Let her put up her feet and relax while you take care of it. Maybe it is washing the dishes, doing her laundry or cleaning her closet. Mowing her lawn. Cleaning her yards. Do it.

15.  Have coffee together

Make a coffee date with Mom. Get together and spend a leisurely afternoon or morning together. Best thing ever!

16.  Enjoy a hobby together

One of my friends’ family had a ritual. Every afternoon, after tea, her aunt, mom and grandma would sit together to sew. Later when asked what was the best time of their day, they immediately mentioned this. So, if you and your mom enjoy a hobby together, do it now. Spend cozy time together creating. If you make something for her, bonus points for you!

17.  Play an indoor game

My Mom and I enjoyed doing this! She loved jigsaw puzzles. And we could spend hours doing this, taking breaks only for coffee or food. Think about what indoor games your mom loves and enjoy them with her.

18.  Make a photo frame

Bring out your creative side, choose your favorite photos with your mom and frame it.  Then gift it to her.

19.  Repair a broken item

I remember when my mom had a top whose length needed altering. When I did it for her, she was thrilled. Does your mom have something that she’s been meaning to mend or repair? Maybe a gadget she loves? Do it for her.

20.  Make her a video

This can be a video of you or one of you together. Tell her how much you love her. And why. A friend of mine made a video of her and her mom singing together – such a treasure!

So yes, it is the thought that counts. Let your Mothers Day gift be from your heart. Your Mom will love it, appreciate it and enjoy it.

Happy Mother’s Day!

These are absolutely stunning ideas Vidya and so relevant for this year isn’t it? With the lockdown we were not able to buy anything except absolute essentials and it actually made Mother’s Day a lot more special since we were all forced to focus on each other and not on material things.
My mom managed to buy a rose pot plant from the grocery store which has brightened up our home. My kids gave me a note on Mother’s Day telling me that I had 20 minutes until my massage time started. Then they told me they were doing my hair afterwards and they tied it up in the most elaborate hairstyle. It really was special and fun, so much better than any other Mother’s Day.
