It is funny how I am reminded at least once, every single day, to enjoy the present moment. What is hilarious is, no sooner than I decided to post every alternate day, life presented me with a series of hurdles. In spite of everything, I had an amazing week. I usually do, but this one was a different kind of amazing.
First, I had no consistent internet. I was connected, but at excruciatingly slow or zero speed. You would think I would be used to that by now, considering the number of times I’ve mentioned it, but no. Hope springs eternal.
My house was Liberty Hall with repair men coming and going. Strange how troubles hate coming in singles.
The week began with a terrifying incident. But I believe in life’s balancing act – I am here to tell the story. So I just decided to let go and…
..enjoy the present moment
It was almost like rewinding my life thirty years when we didn’t have the conveniences and appliances we have today. When I worried about the electrical gadgets we use that need charging, I was relieved of that problem with the electricity taking a holiday too! Unfazed, here’s what I did:
- Caught up on my reading, so you can look forward to a spate of book reviews
- Enjoyed marathon phone calls with friends. Thank God my phone was working. Touch wood!
- Received some fabulous news. One of my most favorite people is getting engaged to be married. Did I hear you say “ha, big deal”? Yes it is! I met this shining star when he was an eight month-old baby. This month, this wonderful young man will turn 26 (wow!) We have some great memories with the family and I had a lovely long chat with his Mom.
- Did some major cleaning up and reclaimed much needed space. Yes, I went on a clutter diet! And came across an old cushion cover Vidur loved as a toddler. The bottom left corner shows one of his toys, called a “cuterpillar” (yeah, you read that right!) and right corner is his toy turtle. Still have the turtle.
- Also found these while getting out glasses to replace the couple we broke this week. Sigh. Too pretty to use. Votive candle holders. They have shiny gold insides.
- Visited my local welfare home with more big bags of giveaways from clearing up stuff. The joy of giving is second to none.
- Sorted out some paper-clutter that was long-pending. I am feeling the relief, yo! And in the process, I signed up for more e-statements, collected all the glossy art paper in a big bag to take to the School for the Blind where they use it to punch braille. Why glossy art paper, you asked? Don’t ask me. Ask those idiot advertisers who sneak them into our newspaper and raise our blood pressure first thing in the morning. Grr. The least I could do is deliver in the right hands.
- Called Vidur’s classmates over for lunch on Sunday. We had a great time. I’ve see those kids grow up from Grade 1 and enjoy the cozy relationship. And what fun it is when the whole family is busy together, especially mine, because they sing as they work. Gorgeous feeling. Look at the result:
- Developed a toothache and hung around the dentist’s clinic. The saga will continue over the next few days. Thank God the dentist and his staff are a pleasant looking lot. Especially the surgeon who does the root canal treatment. It helps you know, when I have to stare into someone’s eyes for over an hour. They might as well be eye-candy, inspiring fiction in my head.
- I saw the movie “Whale Rider” yet again. Just beautiful.
- Had to go out to run an errand and ended up buying this.
- Went out to the local crafts fair (yeah, another one, just down the road) and clicked these photos. I didn’t buy anything. Way too expensive.
And? I have some great news.
Some of you know my blog “Coffee With Mi” I am super-excited to tell you that I’ve moved it from Blogger and it is now a sub-domain of this blog. Its new URL is http://mi.vidyasury.com What I am even more thrilled about is the logo and the header. Please do visit. Because the fabulous Vanita has designed it. Click on the image below to go there:
What do you think?
I also wrote a stream of haiku there. You know I enjoy writing haiku. Because…
So that’s what I’ve been up to.
And oh, I laughed a lot.

I enjoyed the present moment in a big way. Because it is gift.
I’ve learned to let go. I beat myself up over the July Ultimate Blogging Challenge I signed up for, but gave up after Day 3 because life had other plans for me. Real nice ones. Nudging me to enjoy the present moment.
I’ve learned to make time to do nothing. Slow down. Because…
Want to listen to the waves for two minutes? Come with me. Let’s go.
Let’s head to UnknownMami’s now and travel the world together! I am linking with her for Sundays In My City. So glad she keeps it open beyond Sunday!
Question for you, dear Friends,
How are you enjoying the present moment?
Please tell me in the comments!
P.S.: I missed you.

Hi Vidya
Hope your tooth feels better now. Root canals are no fun “eye candy” or not!
Some forces are beyond our control and probably because we are actually supposed to be doing something else. Even if it is only time to stop and enjoy life around us.
Patience is sometimes what we are supposed to also learn and as much as we want things to go as planned it is not to be. When things like that happen I also have to remember to “live in the moment”. Relax and enjoy.

Vidya, you did so much without complaining! WOW! Hope your toothache is all gone and your dentists remains handsome till he completes your root canal 🙂 Loved your post.
how lovely the post is as always letting us into your world Vidya. And yes we enjoy your haiku and I am still waiting the ones you exchange with vidur. Also this even I have to do this no gadget thing I guess until it is not forced on me I dont think voluntarily it would arrive. Waiting for those book reviews at least the list can be shared on twitter or fb or even a personal message I am honestly interested.
Much love 🙂
I try to always focus on the here and now because you can’t live in the past or the future. Thank you for sharing this great reminder of how important it is to live for TODAY.

Do see it, Dhiren. It is a fabulous movie! The photography is fantastic. 🙂 Thanks for commenting!
Loved reading how you spent the time you were away from the blogging world. 🙂
And hey, I too gave up the Ultimate Blog Challenge after Day 6…yes, to enjoy the present moment, rather to attend to the kids homework and other important issues in life. 🙂
I also wanted to tell you that I installed the Happiness Jar that very weekend and I hope it works. Fingers crossed. 🙂

Hugs, Zeenat! Welcome 😀 What a pleasure to see you here! That tooth’s fate will be decided on Saturday. Ugh! 😀 I am in good hands, though. And I visualize a positive outcome, whatever that is!
First of all congrats on your decade, girl.
Gotta learn a lot from you!!
Secondly, am happy that you managed to live in your present despite the hurdles coming your way…kuddos!!

I always read your posts with a huge smile on my face Vidya. Love the glimpses into your world and the pics. So sorry about the tooth. I know more about root canals than I’d like to. Although my dentist gives me a ‘happy pill’ and I’m sort of zoned out by the time they get to work. Hope it’s that easy for you my dear.
e-hugs

Its weird, Rachna. A half-fried murukku fractured my tooth! The pack – Rs.40. My dentist’s bill – likely to be 100 times more. Crazy eh? 🙂
Sometimes it is such a relief to shut down the computer, except to work. I’ve set a deadline for lots of things around the house. With Vidur’s busy schedule, Sury’s traveling and my work, I haven’t had time to do a lot of things I had planned. I’ve just decided to slow down. 😀 Just the decision uplifts me.
I saw some aloe vera plants yesterday and thought of you. Hugs!

Everywhere I go I am struck by finding the unexpected…I came to wish you happy tenth anniversary and instead find a post on enjoying the present moment…and instead of asking you questions on how did you manage to blog for 10 yrs, I sit and reflect on my this moment and if I am enjoying it…
Bhavana, Hugs! You just blessed me with a lovely feeling of “mission accomplished”. Thank you.
Congratulations Vidya on completing ten years in blogging. That’s really an achievment. It’s so true that we need to enjoy the present moment as it is a gift. I enjoy my present moment by spending time with my family and now I’ve taken to reading/ writing and blogging and the list goes on 🙂
The randomness and happiness and awesome ness of ur posts stump me every single time. Do spread the sunshine in ur readers lives like u always do ! all pics r fab and that haiku so damn good
Reading ur single post makes me feel I know a lot abt u 🙂
Another lovely post, Vidya. Workmen? I’m dreading a painting job coming up – but we’ll survive. Did you paint that pillow case? It’s seriously cute!
Your pictures made me think of the Kala Ghoda festival I went to at the start of the year – was tempted to buy so much, but did a fine job resisting. Who wants another artifact to dust? 😉
I do hope your tooth problems get resolved soon. ♥

my first time here and this post made me feel good . I loved that cuterpillar 🙂

Welcome, Jayashree! Oh, that cuterpillar gave us hundreds of hours of happiness 😀 We had two. I am sure one is still in the toy box in my garage! Thanks for visiting 🙂 Heading over to your place now!
There was a time during summers when the power would just disappear for the entire afternoon. The kids and I ended up doing a whole lot of fun stuff together… including making ‘barf ka gola’. 😀

Vidya, a visit to your place always makes me smile… and I leave here feeling much better than when I arrived!
Thanks for the reminder to enjoy the present moment! We have lots to be greatful for…
I love the pictures… that glass tea-set is pretty (whether you need it or not is beside the point… *giggles*… retail therapy is the best!)
And I also love laughing… my hubby and I do so at every possible opportunity (and it doesn’t help that I have a very mischievous husband who needs no encouragement when it comes to laughter…)
Reading – there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book, or sitting up with an e-book (though I prefer the curling up part more… which I’ve been doing less of anyway… *sighs* the joys of an e-reader…)
When you have a moment, please pop over to my place, I have something for you!

Ya it was Rachna’s blog 🙂 I remember interacting with you there. Good to find you again,

BTW that gas incident sure was scary. Forget cylinders which I refuse to deal with, I’m also terrified of cookers 😛
And thanks for telling me about Coffee with Mi, I’ve been wondering why there were no posts.
