3 expert tips to keep your kids healthy at home #kidshealth #childsafety #parenting

When it comes to looking after our kids’ health, we tend to concentrate on physical activity and nutrition. We often forget to closely examine how the environment can affect their bodies. These days, there are several more pollutants in the air inside our homes than the air outside, and children might feel the adverse effects of toxins immediately. Bugs and insects are also major contributors to an unhealthy home environment. Moreover, chemicals found in laundry detergents, deodorizers, construction materials, and even fabric softeners can harm your child’s health to a greater extent than you’d imagine.

Fortunately, there are several things that can be done to create a safer environment for kids and keep them healthy.

3 expert tips to create a safer home and keepyour kids healthy. #kidshealth #childsafety #parenting

Here are three expert tips—a sort of starter kit—to ensure kids health.

  1. Keep Pests Out

Let’s be realistic: no homeowner wants their house to be invaded by cockroaches, fleas, mice, termites, or other pests. They aren’t just irritating and nasty; they can also be devastating for your kids’ well-being and yours. For instance, cockroaches and fleas leave droppings everywhere. These droppings can contaminate clothes, food and household items with diseases and bacteria. It can be especially harmful in the kitchen where kids might be helping themselves to food and in the process, get infected and fall sick. The best thing to do? Eliminate pests.

I remember, when my classmate, who is terrified of cockroaches first moved to the United States, almost had a heart attack when she spotted a roach in the house. Her kind neighbor immediately got a list of Los Angeles pest fighters, San Diego pest control services, and pest combat specialists in other parts of California. She set about eliminating those unwanted critters from her house. Fortunately, advanced pest control vendors use organic products that are friendly to children and pets and have natural ingredients such as rosemary oil and high-quality clove. With organic pest control, residents can feel safe with natural treatments that are continually monitored and tested to ensure the safety of homeowners and their loved ones.

  1. Lock Those Windows

Children are naturally curious, and that’s where open windows can cause problems, especially with toddlers. With all the enticing and fantastic views of the outdoors, windows attract the young ones’ attention—and they are too innocent to know the potential danger that lurks ahead.

We see news stories of children that fall out of the window, which is a life-threatening risk for those living in high-rise apartments and double-story mansions. Statistics show that children falling out of windows is one of the top five home hazards.

According to the Safe Kids Worldwide 2015 Report to the Nation: Protecting Children in Your Home, about eight children under age 5 die each year from falling out a window, and more than 3,300 are injured seriously enough to go to the hospital.

Therefore, always keep your windows locked. It’s the most viable way to ensure the safety of your child. If you’re using windows with pre-installed locks, it won’t be much of a hassle. If your house has conventional windows, you can install window guards on the ones situated on the upper floor. Alternatively, make the habit of locking windows and involve every elder member of the family in the process.

  1. Regulate Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide is produced from incomplete fuel burning, including oil burning, charcoal burning, and release of natural gas. Low levels of this odorless gas can lead to symptoms that mimic ‘flu. However, higher levels of carbon monoxide (CO) can be fatal, especially for the little ones, because CO blocks oxygen from reaching the brain and heart—imagine how scary that is. It is a good idea to install CO alarms outside your bedroom and other living spaces, to ensure that your kids are safe from poisoning.

What is the best way to prevent CO poisoning? Just ensure that all fuel-burning appliances are working properly. Also, homeowners should have their HVAC system inspected each year. However, CO can also be produced by equipment like power washers and portable generators, so it’s important to limit the use of devices that rely on an internal combustion engine for functioning.

Taking care of just these three things can help you enjoy a healthy home and keep your kids healthy!

I find it scary when you said that kids exposed to too much carbon monoxide can cause them to exhibit flu-like symptoms and poison their minds. After getting rid of the harmful air indoors, my next step would be to bring them to a primary care physician. That way, they can give me advice on what to do in order to get rid of the symptoms and increase their immune system.

Such a great article. I’m a new uncle and my neice is about to turn 1 in April. These are some solid tips. I always forget that kids are exposed to so much new stuff and there are dangers lurking all over.

You may enjoy this article I wrote a while back.

I’m so passionate about teaching kids about good nutrition and how to grow up with an understanding of food. I was not raised with that knowledge and had a weight problem for 20+ years as a result.

It’s long, but it comes from the heart.
